McClures Beach

Thanks to the long weekend for Memorial Day, I had one more day after the Ephipany Night camping trip, by myself. And I was not going to squander all of the beautiful hiking opportunities in Northern California. I scanned Alltrails, looking for an easy to moderate hike, and after looking at various options in the woods, around lakes, or up above wine country, I settled on one at Point Reyes National Seashore.

This lovely hike took me down a hill and to a fairly quiet beach. When I arrived, I saw two people fishing off in the distance and another two hanging out on the sand, and that was it. I couldn’t believe I had this lovely beach practically to myself. I saw the rocks out in the distance, and decided I wanted to get there and see farther down the coast. So I started walking. And walking. And walking.

Wow. That was a really long way. But I made it. And then realized I was going to have to do a few small rock scrambles to be able to get to the point I wanted to. I’m pretty glad I was wearing Tevas at this point. Anyway, up and over the rocks, I went, and… ugh… another set of rocks to scramble. I stopped to ask a pair of people I saw coming whether it was worth it, and without hesitation, they said “yeah, definitely!” So I knew I had to go for it.

This picture was pretty near the bottom of the rocks – I didn’t dare take out my camera higher up

There aren’t a lot of pictures from this part of the journey, because honestly I was mostly worried about staying alive. I was definitely exceeding my comfort level and with nobody around to help me out it was probably quite foolish to try. But I’m here writing this, so it turned out ok. I rested for a moment at the highest stable spot I could reach, and then precariously worked my way back down.

Then it came time to work my way back the way I came. over the little scramble, all the way along the beach, and eventually back up the hill. By the time I was on my return trip, more people were starting to arrive. It was still quite a serene beach, but where there were once fewer than 5 people, there were a dozen or more. I passed 3 separate families coming down the hill as I made my way back up. And as I went up, I paused a few times for photos of the scenery and flora. I can’t wait to get back there, and next time take a towel or tarp to hang out on the beach a little longer.
